THE GRACE BETWEEN GRATITUDE

Nov 01, 2026

What we carry, what we love, and the light ahead.
What we carry, what we cherish, and the light that keeps us moving forward. A reflection on finding room for both gratitude and grief, embracing grace, and discovering the strength to keep rising — together.

What we carry, what we cherish, and the light that keeps us moving forward.

“We are stronger in gratitude. We are softer in grace. And we are never meant to carry it all alone.” ~ Sonja Stilp, M.D.

As we enter a season centered on gratitude, I've been thinking about all the things we carry.

Some are visible. Others are tucked quietly into our hearts. Some bring us tremendous joy, while others ask more of us than we ever imagined.

Life has a way of placing both in our arms.

I've been reminded lately that gratitude doesn't mean pretending the weight isn't there. We can be grateful for the life we've built and still grieve what we've lost. We can appreciate the people beside us while missing those who are no longer here. We can find joy in an ordinary sunrise while navigating a season that feels anything but ordinary.

Perhaps this is where grace comes in.

Grace is giving ourselves permission to be human.

To pause when we need to pause. To acknowledge what hurts. To accept help. To release the expectation that we must always be strong, productive, positive, or have everything figured out.

Sometimes strength looks like pushing forward. Sometimes it looks like standing still, taking a breath, and allowing ourselves the space to heal.

And sometimes, the most important thing we can do is simply keep showing up.

What we choose to carry

We cannot always choose what life asks us to carry. But we can become more intentional about how we carry it.

We can choose to hold close the people who bring light into our lives. To nurture the relationships that remind us who we are. To make room for laughter, movement, nature, connection, and the little moments that bring us back to ourselves.

We can choose gratitude without dismissing grief. Hope without denying uncertainty. And grace without giving up on growth.

This is not about finding a silver lining in every difficult experience. Some things are simply hard. Some losses change us. Some journeys take longer than we expect.

But even in those seasons, we retain something incredibly powerful: the ability to choose how we care for ourselves, how we treat others, and how we move forward.

That is empowerment.

The strength of our tribe

One of the greatest reminders in life is that we were never meant to do it all alone.

We need our people. The ones who show up without needing an explanation. The ones who listen, encourage, laugh with us, sit beside us in the hard moments, and remind us that we are still very much part of something bigger.

There is strength in community. There is healing in connection. And there is something extraordinary about being surrounded by people who allow us to be fully human.

At RISE, we believe in the body's capacity to heal, the mind's ability to adapt, and the human spirit's remarkable capacity to keep growing. We believe in restoring what needs attention, innovating how we approach our health, strengthening the foundation beneath us, and empowering ourselves to participate actively in our own journey.

But perhaps empowerment begins with something even simpler:

Giving ourselves permission to begin again.

Keep rising

This season, I hope we make room for both gratitude and grace.

May we be grateful for what we have, gentle with ourselves through what we are navigating, and generous with one another along the way.

May we remember that we don't have to carry every weight alone. That asking for help is strength. That slowing down is not falling behind. And that even when the path feels uncertain, there is still beauty to be found and possibility ahead.

We don't need to have it all figured out to keep rising.

Sometimes rising is simply choosing to meet another day with an open heart.

We are stronger in gratitude. We are softer in grace. And together, we rise.

With gratitude,

Sonja Stilp, M.D.
