Sports injuries can happen at any level of athleticism. Whether you’re first starting or are a seasoned athlete, injuries can happen in any sport, even if you always remember to stretch and warm up.
Some sports injuries, called acute injuries, happen in an instant. You might get an acute injury upon impact when you fall, run into another athlete, or twist your ankle.
Other sports injuries develop over time when you use the same movements over and over again. These are called overuse injuries because they come from repeated motions.

Many sports injuries have nicknames related to the sports in which they commonly occur. For example, tennis elbow is an overuse injury affecting your elbow that can happen when you repeatedly swing your arm.
At RISE, Dr. Stilp carefully evaluates a sports injury to make the correct diagnosis before treatment. She’ll want to know information like how the injury happened, how it feels when you move the injured body part, and if it hurts to the touch.
Dr. Stilp also examines the area of the injury, which might show outward signs like bruising, swelling, or a visible irregularity.
Imaging tests can show injuries you can’t see from the outside. X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or a computed tomography (CT) scan can help Dr. Stilp see the extent of the injury and plan treatment.
Dr. Stilp specializes in personalized sports medicine to reduce pain and restore function so you can reach your athletic potential. To help with healing and recovery, she might recommend:
