Interventional Orthopedics Q & A

What is interventional orthopedics?

Interventional orthopedics is a more modern approach to treating injuries and pain than traditional orthopedics. Instead of using strategies like corticosteroid injections and surgery, interventional orthopedics uses regenerative medicine or orthobiologics.

Orthobiologics are substances from your body, like cells and growth factors, that help with healing. One example is platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is a concentrated injection of platelets from your blood. Platelets play a major role in the natural healing process.

Another example is bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) stem cell therapy. This treatment uses stem cells, or undifferentiated cells, from your bone marrow to help repair tissue damage. Dr. Stilp takes a sample of bone marrow from your hip to collect stem cells for the procedure.

Both BMAC stem cell therapy and PRP injections may help your body heal on its own. They have high success rates and might help you avoid orthopedic surgery in the future.

When might I need interventional orthopedics?

Dr. Stilp might recommend interventional orthopedics within your treatment plan after carefully evaluating your injury. These treatments can help with healing or pain reduction from:

  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Tendinitis
  • Tendinopathy
  • Muscle strains and tears
  • Post-surgical pain
  • Sports injuries

For further recovery support, Dr. Stilp may suggest movement medicine or other therapies at RISE.

What are the benefits of interventional orthopedics?

Interventional orthopedics has substantial advantages as a treatment category. Here are a few highlights.

Non-surgical options

Interventional orthopedics does not use surgical techniques, which means no hospital time and fast healing. With these treatments, you can recover faster and return to your active lifestyle promptly.

Healing support

Instead of simply masking your pain or resolving it temporarily, interventional orthopedics reinforces the healing process for a more complete recovery.

Precision

While performing interventional orthopedic procedures, Dr. Stilp uses imaging to guide the needle into place. Imaging guidance helps you avoid damage to healthy tissues in the treatment process.

Low-risk procedures

Because interventional orthopedics uses your cells and growth factors, these procedures have little or no risk of infections and other complications.

Dr. Stilp uses advanced interventional techniques to help you heal and recover as much as possible. Call RISE or request an appointment online to find out if interventional orthopedics fits into your treatment plan.
